OBJECT OF DESIRE: SALTRAM THE EIGHTH MAKER 2002 SHIRAZ
TO BE RELEASED AT OPULENT APRIL LAUNCH.
February, 2006
The Icon of Barossa, Saltram Wine Estate, will release its 2003 Jimmy Watson
Trophy-winning The Eighth Maker 2002 Shiraz in April.
Creator of the wine, Saltram's eighth Senior Winemaker, Nigel Dolan, has crafted
The Eighth Maker to showcase pure Barossa Valley Shiraz. It also reveals the
influences of the seven previous Saltram Winemakers which include his father,
Brian, and Australian wine legend, Peter Lehmann.
In one of the most hotly contested Jimmy Watson's in memory, Saltram executed a
major coup in 2003, winning with a then unknown, curiously named, Shiraz. For
Nigel Dolan, it meant continuing a dynasty of JWT wins, beginning with his
father in 1962.
The Jimmy Watson Trophy is awarded the best one-year-old red wine at the
Melbourne Wine Show. It has become Australia's most prestigious wine prize -
sought after by winemakers and lauded by wine lovers.
Not only is The Eighth Maker one of the best wines to come out of the 2002
vintage in Australia, it is also spectacularly packaged, in individually
numbered, slate blue presentation cases of eight bottles. It is designed
to be collected and enjoyed, providing a real experience to any owner.
In April, the public will finally be able to experience this very special
offering from Saltram.
The 2002 vintage will be launched on April 7th at a very special black tie
dinner in Melbourne, with acclaimed Vue de monde Chef, Shannon Bennett,
orchestrating a specially designed menu.
The event will be in the grand auspices of Queen's Hall in Victoria's
Parliament House, Melbourne. It will offer a 'money can't buy' experience
for guests, replicating the exclusive and premium nature of the wine.
Saltram The Eighth Maker Shiraz 2002 embodies a philosophy which has
remained unchanged since the wine was first created in 2000: the best
fruit and an uncluttered, gentle approach to the winemaking.
"We're not getting out the chemistry books to make this wine -I just
guide the wine to make sure it shows itself, developing in the way
I would expect and displaying the fruits' intrinsic quality," said Nigel.
"The nuance of the process comes in the selection of fruit and blending of the
wine. From the first vintage in 2000, the fruit has come from a small,
treasured group of vineyards in the Barossa."
Saltram The Eighth Maker 2002 Shiraz is an exciting release for the brand
and consolidates the remarkable history of one of the Barossa Valley's few
original wineries of 150 years ago.
Nigel and his family still live in Mamre Brook House at Saltram Wine Estate
in Angaston, South Australia. The beautiful estate includes Salter's Restaurant,
named after Saltram's founder, William Salter. William built the winery in 1859,
and his sons Edward and Leslie were the first two winemakers to create wines
under the Saltram label from 1862 until 1937 -a significant tenure.
Nigel is proud of Saltram's unique history and lives and works to build the
legacy.
When asked if The Eighth Maker Shiraz 2002 is his best wine ever, Nigel simply
shrugged and said: "I hope I haven't made my best yet."
SALTRAM THE EIGHTH MAKER 2002 SHIRAZ will be available from selected independent
fine wine retailers and restaurants. RRP $1500 per individually numbered case
of eight bottles.
